Welcome To Yuma
Yuma, what an exciting place to be! Or, as we say in our newest video, Yuma, take a look at us now!
Even as we continue to experience unprecedented growth and activity, Yuma's charm and appeal is still well known, not only among those who call Yuma "home," but also those who search for a great quality of life and find it in our community. This is evident by the ever-increasing number of people who are coming to Yuma to live, work and play year-round.
Yuma's greatest gift is its people. Despite our rapid population growth and the ever-increasing rate of change we're experiencing, Yuma retains a hometown warmth, which I know you will experience after just one visit.
Our community is rich with a wealth of historic accomplishments vital to our nation and the Southwest: the first European crossing to the West (Juan Bautista de Anza), the first railroad and plane entering Arizona and, with the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, the final link in the U.S. coast-to-coast highway system - just to name a few.
This strategic importance continues to this day. Nearly all the primary ground weapons systems deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan undergo extensive testing at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground. Twice a year, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma's MAWTS-1 squadron holds the Weapons and Tactics Instructors Course, the largest aviation training exercise in the Marine Corps. Aviation units from all branches of the U.S. military and some foreign military visit the station to participate. We also open up our community to allow the Marine Corps to conduct Operation Desert Talon exercises where military units train in an urban environment simulating the conditions on the ground in the Iraqi theater of operations.
Most wouldn't know it, but Yuma was best known as a river community. Our location provides countless opportunities for outdoor fun in bird-watching, hunting, canoeing, boating, camping, fishing and hiking. Or enjoy the Imperial Sand Dunes, just 10 short minutes west of Downtown Yuma, the location used for such films as "Return of the Jedi," "Rambo III," "SpaceBalls" and "Flight of the Phoenix."
Outdoor enthusiasts are joined by sun worshippers from across the country and around the globe. The Guinness Book of World Records even recognizes Yuma as the sunniest place on earth - where the sun shines 91 percent of the time.
We invite you to explore Yuma's shopping venues. They continue to expand, with a broad array of locally owned specialty shops and restaurants complemented with nationally known retailers. Our proximity to Mexico and California offers additional opportunities for shopping and recreation that can't be found in other Arizona communities.
Yuma is truly a community for everyone. Come join us and make Yuma your home.
