Critter Country to benefit HSOY
To help raise money for Yuma County's furriest, the Humane Society of Yuma will host its seventh annual Critter Country hoedown later this month.
Proceeds from the event benefit HSOY's operating costs. The event is from 5 to 10 p.m. Feb. 27 at Britain's Farm, 4330 Riverside Road in Yuma.
"This is an important event," said Erin Sitera, development director for HSOY.
Tickets are $35 and are available at the HSOY shelter at 285 N. Figueroa Ave. or the Humane Society Thrift Shop, 2375 S. 4th Ave. Tickets and information are also available online at http://hsoyuma.com/events/crittercountry/index.html.
Table sponsorships are available.
At the event, there will be a silent auction, a live auction and a raffle, Sitera said. Items include everything from handmade jewelry, purses and paintings to high-end stereos, tax preparation and tire rotations - a little something for everyone.
And of course - like any good hoedown - there will be dinner and music.
Former Yuma weatherman Brad Wills will come from San Diego to emcee the event, and The Big City Band will play "music for all ages," with country, rock and cover songs, Sitera said.
She said the chuckwagon dinner will include tri-tip, chicken, veggies, baked potato, coleslaw, salad, corn muffins, dessert and drinks such as iced tea, water and soda. There will also a cash "saloon," Sitera said.
With 168 cats and 402 dogs turned in to the shelter in January, Sitera said the donations are very important to supplying the everyday costs associated with keeping the animals.
The HSOY covers 5,500 square miles throughout Yuma County.
It's sad that 268 cats and dogs total were euthanized in January, said Sitera, and the proceeds from the night will help make their stay at the HSOY as humane as possible.
"As soon as we get (the proceeds), it's going to help the animals right then and there."
