Homearama raising cash for adult literacy Sunday
Yumans are opening their doors for a good cause this Sunday: adult literacy.
Homearama 2010 is the annual home show featuring four unique Yuma residences.
Jennifer Adair, event coordinator, said the homes were selected because they provide a diverse picture of Yuma - from a classic dwelling filled with antiques to more modern and contemporary residence.
She noted that each location features a different draw for attendees.
All proceeds from the tour will benefit Adult Literacy Plus of Southwest Yuma, which offers year-round GED, adult basic and English language classes. Adult Literacy Plus, which was formerly known as the Yuma Reading Council, serves over 400 students each year.
This year's Homearama will feature the following four homes:
• The Osterman Home - 1406 W. Camino Real. This home, built by Kammann Development, features Swarovski crystal chandeliers, vintage Kittinger furnishings, mahogany hardwood flooring and an antique Sheraton Steinway piano, among other family heirlooms.
• The Armer Home - 540 S. 7th Ave. This historic home, built in 1941, blends historic details and one-of-a-kind artwork and antiques. One highlight is a Peruvian chair handcarved by the Don Bosco Cooperativa and transported over 10,000 feet down steep mountain trails by campesinos.
• The Dempsey Home - 8288 E. Adobe Ridge Road. A breathtaking view from the mesa overlooks lush fields and mountains. This open floor plan home features 11-foot ceilings, white cabinetry with black granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a collection of Guy Buffet dessert plates. The backyard is done in a Caribbean style with a pool and a 40-foot water slide.
• The Von Vogt Home - 3925 S. Plowman Ave. This Tuscan-style home features a tropical outdoor area with custom pool and water features, an outdoor kitchen and rocked bar area. The interior features a teakwood coffered ceiling and a custom fireplace with travertine tile in the living room.
All homes on the tour will be open from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, with docents to give viewers more details about each home. Photography is not allowed.
Tickets can be purchased for $20 at the door of each property, or call Adult Literacy Plus of Southwest Yuma at 343-9363 for more details.
